Turning in a project 16 years late.
I was not a very good student in high school. I say that relative to my performance in college. I started out good, I think. After my dad died I seemed to lose all interest in school work. Well, at least school work that took any measure of effort and couldn’t be done in one night. Long term projects, especially those where reading was required were the worst. So one time in 11th grade English, I think, we were supposed to read a book and then give an oral report on something or other about the book. I don’t remember what exactly but I do remember I chose to read The Lion, the witch and the wardrobe. I picked it because I had read some of it years before. I thought this was going to be an easy way out, fool the teacher and get a good grade. The night before the presentation I made a horrible poster (hand drawn letters, sketches of the characters). I hadn’t actually read the book and faked my way through the presentation. Of course, looking back on it all these years later I could probably guess that the teacher knew I had no idea of what I was talking about. I recall getting a bad grade… hmmm… imagine that.
Well, now there has been a major motion picture about it.
While traveling the country this past month we visited a book store that had the book along with CDs for a very reasonable price. We bought it and Prince Caspian. I listened to the first book on CD this week as I drove the long trek out to Baytown. I finished listening today and can say with a certain amount of certainty that I have never read that before. I don’t know how I made it through school without doing the projects and reading books.
Oh, the book was good. C.S. Lewis had a very interesting style of writing. Third person omniscient and it was as if he was reading a story to children while putting them to bed. The movie held pretty close to story. A few areas the events weren’t portrayed correctly. Eh, Hollywood.
